Four Mile Ranch Environmental Education

Four Mile Ranch is located near beautiful Pagosa Springs Colorado. As the only Audubon Rockies center, it brings nature into the classroom, and children into nature.

Four Mile Ranch is located near beautiful Pagosa Springs Colorado and is owned by Terry Hershey. Thanks to her generous support, Audubon Rockies Education has been serving Pagosa Springs, Durango, Gunnison, and Crested Butte with high quality education programs for nearly a decade.  As our only center, Four Mile Ranch   brings nature into the classroom, and children into nature.  Classroom programs engage students with fun, hands-on, standards-based activities that introduce important science concepts and vocabulary.  Field trips to Four Mile Ranch and its rivers, ponds, meadows, and forests help students combine science education with outdoor discovery and exploration.

Adult community members are trained as Volunteer Educators to lead student programs at the ranch, helping children gain new perspectives about the natural history and ecology of local landscapes.  The free volunteer training provides education in science and nature concepts, as well as skills and activities to lead children in experiential field programs.  To learn more about becoming a Volunteer Educator, please email Dusty Here

More than 600 children each year visit Four Mile Ranch free of charge.  Participating schools include Pagosa Springs Elementary School and Dulce Elementary School, located on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation in northern New Mexico.  Charter schools, home-school families and other groups can also request Four Mile Ranch programs.
