Attend a Public Meeting for Sage-Grouse

Learn about the Bureau of Land Management’s Greater Sage-Grouse plans.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages 67 million acres of Greater Sage-Grouse habitat. That’s 46 percent of their total habitat. These public lands stretch across 10 Western states. As the primary land manager of the bird’s habitat, the BLM’s decisions play a very important role in determining the bird’s future.

In fact, BLM’s 2015 plans were listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as one of the primary reasons the bird was not listed for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. Since the finalization of the plans, which were never fully implemented, groundbreaking science revealed the range-wide decline of sage-grouse populations and the annual loss of 1.3 million acres of functioning sagebrush habitat across the West. The BLM is now looking to update its management plans and is considering a variety of management actions.

Given the breadth of public lands across the West that will be impacted, the BLM is hosting a series of virtual and in-person meetings. The public is invited to attend these to learn more about the actions being considered. We strongly encourage those who care about public lands and the wildlife they support, to attend to learn more about what is being proposed.

All in-person meetings will be open-house style and include a presentation and opportunities for questions and answers; all times are local. Two virtual meetings will include a presentation and the opportunity to submit questions; times as indicated. Deadline for public comment is June 13, 2024. See the BLM’s fact sheet here.
